Karlwight (26) from Manchester, England
About me
Ok, so here goes attempt #12. You'd think it'd be easy to write about yourself without sounding dull/lame but noooo... Anyways, I'm Karl, part geek, part rock cliche who's looking for a partner in crime. I don't consider "may you live in interesting times" to be a curse. I can say incredibly harsh things and am still told I'm lovely, so either I'm a little schizoid or the peeps I know aren't paying attention. Probably both. I like the usual parade of geek hobbies - computer games, roleplay, comics, reading books and am so geek I ran an event at the National Wargaming and Roleplay Competition. Fear my geek. I'm also have a great love of partying getting salubriously chemically enhanced and stomping the night away most weekends. If any of the above appeals, and my photos aren't too off putting (due to A)I don't photograph well and B)I'm weird looking), drop me a line and let me know these rewrites weren't in vain! ;)

About me
- Where I liveLiving in Radcliffe currently. Radcliffe has *no* redeeming features aside from being in the Greater Manchester area, which means it's close to one of the greatest cities on earth. I love Manchester. It's my kind of place. Did you know the word for Manchester comes from a latin word meaning "breast shaped hill?" Also, did you know that Frederich Engels spent most of his life there?
- Do you want to stay there?Ideally, I'd like to live in Manchester city centre, being close to the nightlife etc. I'd like to live abroad, somewhere chilled and groovy - Sweden's a wonderful place, I'd like to try Canada as I've heard good things and doing a maniacal metropolis (London, New York or Tokyo) for a few years would be interesting.
- What is your occupation? My occupation is a difficult question. I'm one of those people who has never quite figured out a direction in life, but I'm getting closer to the answer. I have a knack for the written word and I'm trying to overcome my natural tendencies to procrastinate profusely and get a few pieces written put them in front of someone professional and then cry as they rip it to pieces ;) Whilst I work my way around to that, I'm a wage slave for an insurance company. If you're with AXA don't crash your car - you'll end up ringing me to complain about something at some point. Whilst I bitch about it, the job isn't that bad and I'm pretty damned good at what I do. Which seems to be sit there whilst someone complains at length about a courtesy car.
- What have you done so far?I have been temping for about 5 years, so I've done every kind of admin/office work that exists. Some of the highlights:- the Probation Service in their drug testing office ironically enough - only admin job I've ever had with a panic button. Call centre mook for a lingerie catalogue which is where I learned the J cup actually exists. Also the job where I heard a girl get complained at for being more well-endowed than a transvestite. working at Reebok and leaving several thousand pairs of trainers stuck in a port in Korea and costing the company god knows how much whilst factory owners in Korea scream at me in broken english.
- What are your future plans?Take over the world. Seriously. The world would run a lot better with someone like me in charge. Obviously the downsides would be the 10-15 years of revolutionary chaos causing untold deaths whilst I establish my glorious rule. Actually seriously this time - I'd like to see if I can make it at this writing gig. Either comics, scripts or straight-up novels. If it turns out I'm a talentless hack, I'm going to conquer AXA until they give me a decent wage and I can be a weekend rockstar.
- Your perfect partnerThe hardest question on here. My perfect partner - loud without being abrasive, strong without being uncaring, intelligent and not afraid of using it, someone who isn't bothered what people think of them whilst taking on board their friends and partners advice and someone who can remind me of the correct use of a bloody apostrophe.
Stuff I like
- What are you interests/hobbies?I have many geeky hobbies. I roleplay both on the table and in the live, stand up version; I even write and run my own events (featuring a dude in a gorilla costume and guy playing an Aztec goddess. I'm sooo avante garde). I play computer games, I spend far too much time on the internet, facebooking, wiki'ing and filling my brain with junk. I read as much as I can and have accrued almost £50 of library fines this year due to my unwillingness to return classy books. Outside of the geekery my interests tend to the weird and wonderful - I'm keenly interested in the occult, religion and metaphysics, I keep an eye on new technology and was over the moon when our government legalised animal/human hybrid embryo experiments and I'm always on the lookout for oddball news items.
- MusicI'm a rock type. Within this category my tastes are reasonably eclectic - my playlist moves from Machine Head to the Doors and then onto Acid Bath. I'm also into selected sounds from outside the guitar and long hair crowd - a little hip-hop, a little funk and a little dance. I have this bizarre passion for covers and have a rather cool collection. How many people can say they own a metal cover of "Walk Like An Egyptian" and a cybergoth version of "Like A Prayer"?
- Your fav tv seriesMy favourite TV series of *all* time is West Wing. That program occupies a special place in my heart, the writing on the first three seasons was outstanding, the acting was great and the whole thing was very well executed. Deeply classy show. Naturally, as King Geek I'm into the better end of the sci-fi range; Babylon 5, Farscape, Heroes etc. Oh and Ideal was genius. Evidently written by someone who's either dealt or bought a lot of weed in his years.
- Your fav books/authorsI have much love for Warren Ellis, comic writer extraordinaire. The man manages to make me laugh and cry over the space of an issue whilst making men in tights actually engaging. Words cannot describe how much I dig Transmetropolitan. The rest of the list:- Iain Banks (I want to live in his books; drug glands, enhanced sex processes and I get to live 400 years - yes please), Hunter S Thompson ("A man on the move and just sick enough to totally confident." The only man who could write about sport well enough for me to give a damn) and William Gibson (he's nailed the future. Everything is proceeding according to his plan). There's more, but I don't have my book shelves to hand ;) Oh, and Hagakure, the Book of the Samurai. I don't have any macho delusions about being a "modern day warrior" but there's truth there that's worth hearing. It isn't important to me that I read the same books as a partner, but I will make them read Transmetropolitan, Hells Angels and Hagakure just to make sure they know where I'm coming from ;)
- What sort of movies do you like?I'm pretty eclectic when it comes to films too. There's horror, scifi (geek!), some drama, lots of foreign films and the the stuff that's impossible to classify. Let's put it this way - Brazil is my favourite film ever. A very beautiful film that never fails to bring a tear to my eye. I don't do:- romantic comedys, English remakes of quality foreign films (I have no issue with subtitles), terrible adaptations of great comics (I'm looking at you League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and Disney films. Although Lilo & Stitch did get a few laughs out of me, shamefully enough.
- Types of people you like?I'm quite at home with most folks, able to relate to anyone who doesn't consider themselves normal (which is a wider bracket than you might think). I like people who are down to earth without being un-classy. I like people who are different and have their own take on life that I've never come across. I like people who can deal with blunt, harsh dudes like myself whilst realising I don't mean offense it's just easier than walking on eggshells.
- What kind of people do you find attractive? I'm not going to pretend that "what's on the inside is only important." I have a thing for pale skin and dark hair. I have another thing for red heads (as 90% of the time it comes with pale skin. Bonus!). I'm a sucker for goth ladies.
- FoodI'm into spicey food - curries, chillies that sort of thing. I like sushi but I'm ashamed to admit I've never tried any authentic sushi. I'll do most types of restaraunts, the only problem I could have if there's fruit involved. I love cooking and am always willing to throw something together from random ingredients.
- DrinksI was off the booze for about 7 years before returning to the fold and making up for every second I've missed ;) I enjoy spirits + mixer, usually vodka or JD and coke. I'll dabble in the more extreme beverage; absinthe, tequila etc. Sambuca makes me instantly ill. I also have a soft spot for Warsteiner lager as it's German rocket fuel!
- Fav thingMy favourite possession is my computer. Music, watchables, stuff to read and sort-of-free communication with the world. What more can a man ask for?
- Fav PlaceMy favourite place would be in bed on a Sunday afternoon with my lady. This may make me a romantic of some description.
